Mr. Sutherland specializes in Kidney, Pancreas and Islet Cell transplantation as well as laparoscopic living donor nephrectomies. He is clinical lead for pancreas transplantation in Scotland.

Appointments and Activities

Mr. Sutherland was appointed as a consultant transplant surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in January 2016. He graduated from Edinburgh Medical School in 1999 before embarking on his basic and higher surgical training in Oxford. During this time he completed a DPhil at the University of Oxford researching how ‘Hypoxia Inducible Factor’ can protect organs from ‘ischaemia-reperfusion injury’.  He then moved back to Edinburgh in 2012 to finish his higher surgical training in general and transplant surgery. Prior to taking up his consultant position he completed a fellowship in living donor nephrectomies at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. 

Mr. Sutherland’s research interests include ischaemia reperfusion injury, ischaemic preconditioning, high altitude physiology and new technologies in organ preservation. He has previously held a Wellcome Research Training Fellowship, Royal College College of Surgeons and British Transplant Society fellowships and he was recently awarded an National Research Scotland Clinician.  He was recently awarded an MRC Clinical Academic Research Fellowship to investigate the therapeutic role of KMO inhibitors in pancreas perfusion and islet cell isolation.
