POPS (Proactive care of Older People undergoing Surgery)

This is a service for older, frailer surgical patients  within the Western General Hospital.

POPS Team can support care of surgical inpatients within Colorectal wards.

Our team help to manage the care of older, complex patients admitted to surgical wards. We look after people undergoing elective or emergency surgery. 

 

POPS team are involved throughout the frailer patient's admission with the aims of:

  • Reducing postoperative complications such as delirium (confusion), infections, pain, immobility and continence problems
  • Optimising rehabilitation with the support of ward physiotherapists and occupational therapists
  • Maintaining continuity of care
  • Supporting complex discharge planning
  • Increasing the likelihood of returning to the preoperative place of residence
  • Liaising with social care and community services where appropriate

 

The POPS team is a Medicine for Elderly (MoE) based Multidisciplinary team that works closely with the surgeons, anaesthetists and Allied Health Professionals.
