Our extensive research facilities combined with large caseloads allow us to conduct world class research in all fields of colorectal surgery. We have a strong research culture in the Edinburgh colorectal unit. We have a substantial clinical and laboratory research portfolio, with a number of major peer-reviewed grant-funded programmes and several project grants supporting clinical and basic biological research. We lead and recruit to multicentre commercial and academic trials, harnessing the high throughput of the unit to achieve UK-leading recruitment figures in some studies. We hold regular departmental research meetings, have established standing patient and public engagement, regularly submit to local and national conferences, and mentor trainees and nursing colleagues as local Principal Investigators and co-investigators. Current projects We are the leading investigating centre of ALLEGRO study. We also take part in other nationally and internationally run projects and have an active PPI group, helping inform our research direction and delivery.
