Eligibility

Am I eligible to apply?

The fellowship focuses on expert training in colorectal surgery, to transition a fellow from senior trainee to consultant in UK.

This is a peri-CCT fellowship, which means completion of general surgery training (2 years of Core Training and 6 years of Speciality Training (4 years of general surgery and 2 years of colorectal surgery).

Any trainee at the level of UK ST8 or peri-CCT or equivalent could be considered for the fellowship.

I am from an EU/non-EU country. Can I apply?

To work in the UK, you must have the appropriate visa and be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).  

Fellowship

Duration

The fellowship is normally for one year.

Start day

This is variable depending on availability of the posts.

On-call commitment is expected to be 1:10.

Number of operations

The unit covers all colorectal subspecialties and the fellow is expected to be involved in :

  • Laparoscopic colonic resections (30-40)
  • Laparoscopic/open rectal resections (15-20)
  • Pelvic exentrations (5-10)

Other operations that the fellow could get involved include IPAA (10-20), IBD surgery, proctology, TEMS (after attendance of course) and pelvic floor.

We also have CMR Versius Surgical Robotic System and you are welcome to attend and observe operations.

Accreditation

Our fellowship is currently not accredited as one of the Royal College Fellowships. However, we believe the training and experience you get is on par with the fellowship. Please see the section of testimonials from previous fellow and an example logbook.  

Miscellaneous

Can you remind me when job advert is out?

We do not have any system to generate individual alerts. Please check the Scottish medical job site periodically.

Do I have to come for hospital visit prior to interview?

This is not necessary. However, the candidate is encouraged to contact the department for informal inquiries, as per job advert.
