We have 11 approved Scottish Foundation School posts at our department. Foundation Year 1 (FY1) At FY1 level, the post will offer experience in managing colorectal patients including wound assessment, fluid management and post-operative reviews. There are opportunities for ward-based teaching and juniors to present cases. All postholders will be allocated a supervisor and an audit project at the start of the placement. There is a teaching programme at least 1 hour a week. Overall, it is a busy job and will give you good exposure to surgical management of acute and elective patients. There are opportunities to attend theatre and outpatient clinics Foundation Year 2 (FY2) The post holders will be largely in Surgical Assessment Unit and assessing surgical admissions. This can get pretty busy as there are usually 8-15 admissions daily. On elective days, the main tasks are to help FY1s with ward jobs, spend time in theatre, or assist the person admitting new patients. There is a teaching programme at least 1 hour a week. Overall, this is a good job if you want to do surgery - there are lots of opportunity for theatre time and admitting patients is a good way to learn about presentations of common surgical admissions.
