Professor Dixon's research focuses on surgical perspectives in neoadjuvant endocrine therapy of large operable and locally advanced breast cancer, particularly aromatase inhibitor treatment. Appointments and Activities Current Professor Dixon has been an invited speaker at numerous international meetings, symposia, and conferences on breast cancer. His research focuses on surgical perspectives in neoadjuvant endocrine therapy of large operable and locally advanced breast cancer, particularly aromatase inhibitor treatment. Professor Dixon and his team have identified genes that predict for response to endocrine treatment and have outlined the DNA changes seen in patients who develop resistance to endocrine treatment. In his clinical role he has developed new approaches to improve cosmetic outcomes after breast conserving surgery and developed new methods of breast reconstruction. Professor Dixon is a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of both Edinburgh and England and also an Honorary Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Professor Dixon has published over 300 papers, contributed 120 book chapters, and written or edited 25 books. He was the inaugural Managing Editor of The Breast and the former Editor of the British Medical Journal. He is a reviewer for 20 cancer-related journals, and on the Editorial Board of Breast Cancer Management and Annals of Surgical Oncology. Professor Dixon has given over 300 invited lectures all around the world. He was the Royal College of Surgeons of Australasia Visiting Fellow in 2000 and 2011. Professor Dixon has been the co-chair of the Miami Breast Cancer Conference since 2008. In 2013 he was voted the 36th greatest person in Edinburgh of all time, and received an OBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace for his work improving our understanding and improving the management of breast disease. In 2015 Professor Dixon was awarded the Health Champion at the Edinburgh Evening News Local Hero Awards as voted for by local residents. Past Professor Dixon received his MBChB and MD degrees from Edinburgh University, and trained in breast cancer research at the University's Department of Clinical Surgery. He also has a 1st class Bachelor of Science degree in Pathology. He trained in Edinburgh and Oxford.
