Surgical Posts in Edinburgh

In selecting posts for an individual trainee, the Foundation Supervisor will consider:

• your long-term career intentions, if known
• your likes and dislikes
• personal and geographical factors

In a given year, each trainee would only be expected to travel between two geographic sites, such as Edinburgh and Fife, or Edinburgh and the Borders.

Foundation Year One (FY1)

Surgical rotations in F1 are located at seven hospitals in and around Edinburgh.

Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh:

• general surgery - upper Gastrointestinal, endocrine and hepatobiliary
• vascular surgery
• orthopaedic surgery
• thoracic surgery

Western General Hospital: General (colorectal and breast) surgery and urology.

Borders General Hospital, Melrose: General and orthopaedic surgery.

St John’s Hospital, Livingston: General and plastic surgery.

Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline: General surgery.

Royal Hospital for Sick Children: Paediatric (general) surgery.

There are also several anaesthetic rotations at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Borders General Hospital and Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.

Foundation Year Two (FY2)

Surgical rotations in F2 are at six hospitals in and around Edinburgh:

Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh:

• general surgery
• orthopaedic surgery
• cardiothoracic surgery
• Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU)

Western General Hospital: Neurosurgery and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery.

Borders General Hospital, Melrose: Orthopaedic surgery.

Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline: General surgery

Royal Hospital for Sick Children: Paediatric surgery.

There are also anaesthetic and ITU rotations at the Queen Margaret Hospital and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

In addition there are Accident and Emergency (A&E) rotations at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.
