Dr Katie Shaw Senior Lecturer & Programme Manager Clinical Surgery University of Edinburgh RIE Contact details Email: catherine.shaw@ed.ac.uk Appointments and Activities Catherine (Katie) has a diverse background in research science having studied pharmacology at undergraduate level and completing a PhD in cardiovascular pharmacology. Following eight years as a Post-Doctoral research fellow conducting translational research into the role of nano particulate air pollution in cardiovascular disease, Katie joined the Department of Clinical Surgery and Surgical Informatics group in 2015. The Surgical Informatics group (https://surgicalinformatics.org) conducts data driven research to improve outcomes for patients. We conduct research projects on a global scale, including leading the GlobalSurg Collaboration (https://globalsurg.org); an international group of surgical researchers from medical students to professors collecting data on surgical outcomes in over 80 countries. Together with Professor Ewen Harrison, Katie leads the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery (GSU) at Edinburgh University – a partnership with the University of Birmingham and collaborators in Low and Middle Income Countries. During the Covid19 pandemic, the Surgical Informatics group collaborated with ISARIC (https://isaric.org) to report the hospital inpatient Covid19 data to the UK government. Katie also has an active interest in research education; she leads the Masters year of the MSc Surgical Sciences – an online postgraduate degree delivered in partnership by Edinburgh Surgery Online (https://www.edinburghsurgeryonline.com) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, as well as chairing the Education and Training Committee of the NIHR GSU. In addition, together with Professor Harrison and Dr Riinu Pius, Katie developed and runs the HealthyR – R for Health Data Science https://healthyr.surgicalinformatics.org courses which teach the R computer programming language to healthcare researchers.
