We manage both elective and temporary lower gastrointestinal (GI) problems for the Lothian region. Lower GI emergencies are admitted to the unit every day of the week. This emergency intake comprises all lower GI surgical emergencies presenting within Lothian and forms a tertiary receiving service for most of South East Scotland. Emergency intake is shared with surgical units in the Royal Infirmary, who receive patients with upper GI disorders. There is also close liaison with the Medical Gastroenterology Unit and an active and comprehensive GI Endoscopy Service.
