His main subspecialty interest is the management of complex abdominal wall hernias, laparoscopic upper GI surgery (including hernias) and bariatric surgery.

Appointments and Activities

Current

Mr de Beaux was appointed as Consultant General and Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2001. He also provides inpatient and day case general surgery, elective and emergency endoscopy, and general surgery emergency cover for the Lothian Region.

Mr de Beaux has a major interest in post-graduate teaching, particularly in the field of hernia surgery. He co-convenes at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh a number of ‘hands on’ training courses in open and laparoscopic hernia surgery. He was co-president of the European Hernia Society 2014 Annual meeting held in Edinburgh (28-31 May 2014) and continues to serve on the International Scientific Committee for the Annual EHS Congress. He is a regular member of faculty giving invited lectures at Hernia and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Conferences in Europe, the Americas and Asia. He is past-president of the British Hernia Society, organising the Biannual British Hernia Society Meeting in Edinburgh in 2006 and 2018.  He is also the General Secretary of the European Hernia Society and Co-Treasurer of the UEMS Abdominal Wall Section.  He is a member of the BJS Society Council.

Mr de Beaux is Associate Editor for the journal, Obesity Surgery.  He also is on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Surgery, World Journal of Surgery, and the Journal of Minimal Access Surgery.  He has also published particularly on hernia surgery, and authored numerous chapters on this and other surgical topics.

Mr de Beaux represents the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh on SIGN (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network) Council and the SIGN Strategy Group. He is also involved with International Guideline Groups relating to hernia surgery and abdominal wall surgery, including HerniaSurge (www.herniasurge.com).

Past

Mr de Beaux graduated MBChB with Honours from the University of Aberdeen in July 1988. His pre-registration and surgical Senior House Officer posts were in Aberdeen.

The remainder of his training was in the South East of Scotland. This included two years as Research Fellow under Professor Sir David Carter graduating MD with his thesis, "Inflammatory mechanisms in acute pancreatitis".

He spent the year 2000 as Senior Registrar, Department of Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery, Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia.
