Clinical Interests

While he is a broadly-trained general surgeon, Mr Tulloh maintains particular interests in complex laparoscopic procedures including bariatrics and hernia surgery, both laparoscopic and open. He is also interested in emergency surgery in general, and in the initial assessment and management of acutely unwell surgical patients.

Current

From January 2022 Mr Tulloh will be one of two general surgeons at the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.  He has been a general and upper GI surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh since 2004.  He will continue his role as an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh and part of the teaching faculty for Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient courses through The Royal College of Surgeons. 

Past

Born and bred in Melbourne, Australia, Mr Tulloh’s undergraduate clinical years were spent at St Vincent's Hospital. Postgraduate training in surgery was also based at St Vincent's and was completed in early 1990.

After a year as a senior registrar in Melbourne doing paediatric surgery, thoracic surgery and plastics he travelled to Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, for two years further training in upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery, vascular and breast surgery. At the end of 1992 he returned to the rural centre of Echuca, Northern Victoria, Australia, to establish his own practice. As one of two general surgeons in the region he managed a broad range of surgical conditions with an emphasis on general gastrointestinal, laparoscopic and emergency surgery.

He moved to the UK in 2002 and took up a post as Consultant general surgeon at St John’s hospital in Livingston, West Lothian, and than moved across to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2004.
