Following graduation from the University of Oxford in 1998, Luke Devey began his clinical career with house jobs in Oxford and Newcastle. Thereafter he undertook his basic surgical training in Edinburgh between 1999 and 2004. Mr Devey's research project, supervised by Professor Stephen Wigmore, concerned the role of hemeoxygenase-1 in hepatic ischemia reperfusion injury and macrophage differentiation. His work was funded by a Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship and led to the award of a PhD by the University of Birmingham as well as several National and International prizes. Mr Devey has enjoyed excellent support for his post-doctoral research, in the form of a prestigious Clinician Scientist Fellowship awarded by the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Health Foundation. His research fellow, James Richards, is funded by a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training fellowship. Mr Devey integrates his scientific studies with clinical work as a senior surgical trainee in the South East Scotland rotation.
