Akyol's primary clinical interest is organ transplantation (liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation). Outside transplantation he has a sub-specialty interest in endocrine surgery and general surgery in the day surgery unit.

Mr Akyol graduated Medical School from the University of Ankara. Mr Akyol completed his basic surgical training in the University Department of Surgery, Medical School, Ankara University.

Appointments and activities

Current

Mr Akyol moved to his current post as Consultant Surgeon in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation and general surgery at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh in June 1997.

He introduced pancreas transplantation to Scotland, established the Scottish Pancreas Transplantation Unit in Edinburgh and is founding chair of the United Kingdom Pancreas Transplant Forum. He also sits on the editorial board of Transplantation.

His research interests parallel his clinical practice, primarily focusing on clinical research in organ transplantation, organ donation, allocation and distribution of organ allografts and immunosuppression.

Past

He undertook higher surgical training in the University Department of Surgery, Western Infirmary, Glasgow. During his higher surgical training he also spent 2 years in research and obtained a higher academic degree (MD) from the University of Glasgow.

Mr Akyol completed his higher surgical training in 1992 and was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow in December 1992.

A former education secretary and council member of the British Transplantation Society and an examiner for the intercollegiate MRCS for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He currently represents Liver Transplantation in the Council of the British Transplantation Society.

He represented Scottish Liver Transplant Unit and The Scottish Pancreas Transplant Unit at UK Transplant (subsequently NHSBT) Liver and Pancreas Advisory Groups. He was instrumental in the development of standard patient selection criteria for liver transplantation in the UK and the ongoing work for allocation of deceased donor organs for liver transplantation.

Memberships

Mr Akyol’s memberships:

  • Currently a council member of the Scottish Renal Association.
  • Chair of the Scotland Kidney Transplantation Alliance.
  • Member of the steering group of Scottish Renal Registry.
  • Founding member and chair of the Northern Liver Alliance.
  • He has had a longstanding interest in admission policies to Medical Schools and served as Member of the University of Glasgow and Edinburgh MBChB admissions committees. He was appointed in early 2011 as the Director of MBChB Admissions at the University of Edinburgh.
